A Visit to the Fisher Building “Detroit’s Largest Art Object”

This past weekend I had the pleasure to attend a tour of a Detroit Gem, The Fisher Building.  The tour was provided for free by Pure Detroit which operates one of its retail stores out of the first floor of the glorious building.  The building is an amazing work of art as soon as you walk in and view the extremely decorated vaulted ceilings which capture the sun light in numerous ways making them look even larger and more opulent as you walk around looking up at them.  The tour was given by George Malloy who knew the Fisher inside and out.  He took the group of 20 or so for at least an hour going from the initial building stages all the way to the top on the 26th floor.

Some great facts about that building were:

  • Opened September 1, 1928
  • It is 441 feet tall
  • Almost every floor is built with an array of amazing Mosaics, marbles, painted ceilings and brass and bronze are everywhere you look.
  • The Fisher brothers were an amazing group giving millions to countless charities.
  • Construction only took 15 months.

Check out some of the images I took here and look at all of them on my gallery page for the visit.

If you have a chance to take this tour I would highly recommend doing it.  Not only will you learn more about our great city but you will also have the chance to view it up close and take some pictures for those memories.
